In the 1960s, Andy Warhol created a series of the most iconic pop culture paintings of all-time, capturing the essence of the most representative figures of his era, all of which became his muses. In his paintings of Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, Warhol immortalized the color of their hair, the bright tones of their eyes and their voluptuous red lips, as symbols of immortality. Conversely, in his portraits Amanda as Liz Taylor, and Amanda as Marilyn Monroe, LaChapelle portrayed Amanda Lepore in a tribute to the Warhol paintings. In his own words: "I was doing a tribute to the painting, and took the idea of Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, the famous paintings of Andy Warhol. I tried to make them look like silkscreen. They are not really homage to Andy Warhol or Liz Taylor or Marilyn Monroe. They are a homage to the silk screen paintings that I felt in love with; that Andy Warhol made." June 22 - July 21 | 2016 |
