Postmodernity

LaChapelle famously re-works archetypes from the ‘collective unconscious’ in the contemporary sphere and it’s this practice that has come to characterize him as an artist. While it is entirely possible to bear witness to other reinterpretations of this kind in the lexicon of contemporary art, LaChapelle stands apart from his peers, because he not only takes on these classic scenes, but, in the appropriation of them, also suggests another, often subversive, perspective on the present. Moving beyond a practice that is post-modern, when LaChapelle shifts a classical scene to our times, it becomes a vital element of the contemporary cultural conversation – one that helps us reflect upon meaning and humanity in the modern era.
