Enlightment

On a fundamental level all visual art, since the very first cave paintings, is conceived to convey an emotion or situation or to communicate a narrative that binds us in our humanity. When an artist can truly touch people and has the innate sensitivity to evoke an emotional response in his or her audience, the work begins to become part of something bigger - the collective unconscious. At that moment of recognition and identification sometimes so fleeting when the viewer understands the author’s message, art helps us to make sense of our lives, and shine light on the wider socio-political landscape of our era.

Appealing to a visual discourse as subtle as it is powerful, LaChapelle invites us to reflect on a capitalist culture obsessed with excessive and predatory consumption, creating unique, compelling images shot-through with an evocative narrative that leads us, inevitably, to contemplation and reason. In series such as Landscape, Gas Stations and Rape of Africa, he presents unscrupulous exploitation.
