Contemporaneity

The vivid imagination of David LaChapelle takes myriad aspects of human experience into its expansive sway. Vibrantly exploding with deep philosophical considerations, his work is infused with questions of past, present, future, life and death. Unsurprisingly, his work does not shy from the complex paradoxes of humanity; elements that would oftentimes be deemed unimportant in the discursive space of art are fully engaged in his work – and it is precisely these aspects that provide us with clues revealing the fundamental notions of regeneration, darkness and death explored in his oeuvre.

As a medium of expression art is infinite, but its main purpose is arguably to inspire and fire the senses. Ultimately, an artist seeks to convey his ideal of beauty or personal emotional landscape through a creative medium. The individual response to this expression reinforces an idea of community, or shared consciousness. This is especially true in the instance of religious archetypes, which, regardless of belief or religion, are globally recognized and part of the shared lexicon of the human experience and universal symbolism.
